Tangled Web is the 4th episode in The Nightmare Room TV Series.

Premise[]

A boy name Josh Ryan has a knack for telling lies here and there in order to get himself out of trouble. However when a mysterious substitute teacher tells him that he believes him, all of his lies begin to come true whether he likes it or not.

Synopsis[]

When Josh tells the substitute math teacher unfamiliar with his excuses that his homework was stolen by unique robbers along with his entertainment system, Mr. Farber seems to believe him.

Afterward, Josh finds the science snakes he told scornful bully Patrick were in his backpack actually there, is robbed just like in his story, and a menacing boy shows up claiming to be his older military-school dropout brother Frank — a character he made up to threaten Patrick.

Everyone suddenly believes that the things happening are the truth even when he admits they're not, and his excuse of why his parents can't be told of his getting in trouble lands them in Hawaii. Everything he says comes true, which creates problems when he has to deal with Frank, ninja mercenaries, Sting Borden attacking him, and a mummy coming to life...

Trivia[]

  • While this is technically an original episode, the setup of a lying kid being punished is similar to the Nightmare Room entry Liar Liar. In that book, he lies so much that he ends up in an alternate dimension and forced to tangle with an evil version of himself.
  • Director Ron Oliver previously did episodes of Goosebumps, making him the only crew memeber who worked on that show to also work on this one.
  • The Mummy is played by Peter Jarvis, who also portrayed a mummy in the Goosebumps episodes Return of the Mummy and Don't Wake Mummy.
